Railway Permanent Way Manager – Engineering Qualification/Experience ESSENTIAL 

Location – Snowdon Mountain Railway (Llanberis North Wales)

Position – Permanent / Full Time

Start Date – Immediate

Salary – 40k to 42k dependant on qualifications and experience

Snowdon Mountain Railway are looking for a Permanent Way Manager to lead the Permanent Way Department, to progress routine maintenance and upgrades to the track and track side infrastructure including bridges and viaducts.

We are looking for a person with the following qualifications, attributes, and skills:

Essential

  • An Engineering Qualification (Degree or HND/HNC) or equivalent professional experience.
  • Proven experience of working on Railway Permanent Way particularly related to renewals and enhancements.
  • Experience at a Management Level
  • Experience in managing budgets and stock ordering / control.
  • Experience with the use of computers and office programs along with the ability to learn new software within the working environment.
  • Have an analytical thought process.
  • Seek to improve existing ways of working, by finding efficiencies in processes.
  • The aptitude to work on your own initiative and be proactive in team building.

Desirable

  • Membership of a relevant engineering professional institution.
  • A sound knowledge of technical, safety and performance standards relating to track.
  • Experience in design, installation and maintenance.
  • Formal qualifications in risk identification and assessment.

Outline of Management Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Reporting to the Senior Railway Operations Manager, the post holder is expected to:

  • Manage the day to day running of the Permanent Way Sub Department, ensuring manpower is available to meet required works and needs of the business.
  • Work with and alongside the other department Managers in the prioritisation of; work, manpower allocation and supervision of all routine and pre-planned; maintenance undertakings, repairs and upgrades along unplanned and/or reactive repairs.
  • Ensure the condition of the track and trackside infrastructure remains in a safe and operational state, with all repairs and maintenance being actioned promptly, completed and recorded correctly on the appropriate paperwork.
  • Oversee, check and sign off all work carried out on the track and track side infrastructure.
  • Ensure all work undertaken by staff is carried out in a conscientious and safe manner whilst maintaining compliance with the Company’s Maintenance Standards and Health and Safety Policy.
  • Assist the management team during any breakdowns, accidents or incidents and take the lead on any recovery actions where required.
  • Produce, improve and further develop Permanent Way Maintenance Competency Standards and record keeping.
  • Produce a proposed winter works maintenance plan prior to the ‘Winter Maintenance Planning Meeting’ held in September of each year.
  • Monitor and maintain all spends within agreed budgets ensuring the Engineering POCON is completed correctly and kept up to date.

Outline of General Responsibilities and Duties

  • Ensure routine discipline is maintained including correct time keeping and absence control for all staff under your control.
  • Snowdon Mountain Railway employees are expected to work a flexible policy during the Operating Season where work requirements can change at short notice.
  • Work in a pro-active manner within the Railway Operations and Maintenance Team, leading by example and take a hands-on lead where necessary to maintain progress and track availability.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duty or task as directed by the Senior Management Team.
  • Ensure that daily, weekly and monthly; inspections / routine maintenance is completed and recorded correctly.
  • Report regularly to the Senior Railway Operations Manager on maintenance planning, progress of works and maintenance issues.
  • Assume responsibility for specific projects or functions and manage time and resources to meet defined objectives.

Hours of work

During the Winter Maintenance Season (Nov – Mar) – 37.5 hrs per week (Mon to Fri).

During the Operating Season (Apr to Oct) – an average of 42 to 45 hrs per week with some late and weekend working.

2024 Seasonal Staff

Would you like to work at one of the most famous and unique attractions in Wales? Join us in 2024 as part of the Snowdon Mountain Railway team. There are full-time seasonal roles available for Catering and Retail Assistants, and Cleaners at Llanberis Station, and up at Hafod Eryri, the summit visitor centre.

Our working day varies through each department, meaning shifts can be long, and you’ll also be working over weekends.
