2022 Seasonal Catering and Retail Staff

Would you like to work at one of the most famous and unique attractions in Wales?  Join us in 2022 as part of the Snowdon Mountain Railway team. There are full-time seasonal roles available in catering and retail at Llanberis Station.

During our 2022 season trains will be running to Clogwyn Station ¾ up Snowdon and Hafod Eryri, the summit building, will remain closed for 2022 therefore we are not recruiting for any positions at the summit.

Our working day varies through each department, meaning shifts can be long, and you’ll also be working over weekends.

Railway Maintenance Operative (Fitter Bias) / Locomotive Driver

We’re looking to recruit a Railway Maintenance Operative (Fitter Bias) / Locomotive Driver to work at Snowdon Mountain Railway. The role is full-time and permanent. Our operating season runs from mid-March until the end of October, but the role also includes closed season responsibilities.

The main duties of the role will be to carry out repairs and maintenance of all SMR locomotives, carriages, associated rolling stock and other equipment as directed by the Railway Maintenance and Operations Department.

Reporting to the Railway Maintenance Supervisors / Rolling Stock Manager / Railway Operations Manager other responsibilities will include working a flexible policy during the Operating Season where rostered duties can change at short notice as business demands. You’ll also carry out late and standby duties as directed by your line manager. Your hours of work will be an average of 48 hours per week including weekends (March to November).

During the closed season you’ll be working as part of the Maintenance Team on closure work, maintenance and repairs as allocated. Your hours of work will be an average of 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday (November to March).

We’re looking to recruit a Railway Maintenance Operative (Trackman Bias) / Locomotive Driver to work at Snowdon Mountain Railway. The role is full-time and permanent. Our operating season runs from mid-March until the end of October, but the role also includes closed season responsibilities.

The main duties of the role will be to carry out repairs and maintenance of the SMR Permanent Way and other parts of the railway infrastructure as directed by the Railway Maintenance and Operations Department.

Reporting to the Railway Maintenance Supervisors / Railway Infrastructure Manager / Railway Operations Manager other responsibilities will include working a flexible policy during the Operating Season where rostered duties can change at short notice as business demands. You’ll also carry out late and standby duties as directed by your line manager. Your hours of work will be an average of 48 hours per week including weekends (March to November).

Assistant Railway Operations Manager

We’re looking for an Assistant Railway Operations Manager to join us as part of the SMR Senior Management team. Reporting to the Railway Operations Manager you’ll be responsible for ensuring that all Operational Duties are adequately covered to meet the requirements of the business, assisting in the preparation and running of traffic plans, manpower and supervision of traffic operations. You’ll ensure that periodic testing and maintenance for Rolling Stock has been carried out and is fit for use with all daily checks completed promptly and correctly with appropriate paperwork.

We work to a flexible policy in a in a unique environment during the Operating Season which runs from mid-March to the end of October, where rostered duties can change at short notice as the business demands, with late, weekend and standby duties being part of the role. You’ll also carry out specific duties during our closed season in preparation for the following year.

Essential

  • Managerial skills and experience
  • Experienced Health and Safety Management
  • Experience in compliance reports and recommendations
  • Possess a strong working knowledge of Office, particularly Excel
  • Enthusiasm for a career in Rail, underpinned by a knowledge and understanding of our sector and work
  • Have an analytical thought process
  • Seek to improve existing ways of working, by finding efficiencies in processes
  • The aptitude to work on your own initiative and be proactive in team building

Key Duties:

  • Ensure all routine checks have been carried out and signed for prior to entering into service for the day
  • Assist with the preparation and management of Traffic Control and Guard rostering
  • Assist with the preparation and development of Standards of Competence for all Operational Roles (Drivers, Traffic Controllers, Guards etc.)
  • Assist with the continued development of Health, Safety and Environmental Policy and Procedures
  • Assist with the production of policy, procedure, training and competency paperwork
  • Administer and monitor safety audits by department heads reporting directly to the Railway Operations Manager
  • Ensure all work undertaken by staff is carried out in a conscientious and safe manner whilst maintaining compliance with the Company’s Operations Procedures and Health and Safety Policy
  • Work in a pro-active manner with the Engineering Team, taking the lead where necessary to maintain effective operational running of trains
  • Ensure that the Traffic rota is maintained and that all shift requirements are covered by the appropriately qualified staff
  • Assist the Railway Operations Manager to define staff training requirements and standards
  • Supervise Operational Role training and ensure that all training is completed efficiently and effectively
  • Carry out late and weekend duties as per the Traffic Controller rota or Management rota
  • Complete a Traffic Controller and a Guard duty at least once every month to avoid skill fade of guard skills and traffic operations skills

This is a permanent full-time position.

The salary range is £28k to £32k dependent on experience and qualifications.
