If there’s one thing we know about Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), it’s that no two days on the mountain are ever quite the same.
One morning, the summit can be bathed in glorious sunshine with views stretching for miles across Eryri. By the afternoon, the clouds might roll in, creating a completely different – but equally memorable – experience.
That’s all part of the magic of visiting Wales’ highest mountain.
Whether you’ve booked a journey to the Summit or are joining us for one of our Heritage services, here’s everything you need to know about Snowdon weather before you travel.
Why is the weather so different on Snowdon?
Standing at 1,085 metres (3,560 feet) above sea level, Snowdon has its own mountain climate.
It’s not unusual to leave Llanberis in a T-shirt and arrive at the summit reaching for a jumper. In fact, temperatures at the top can often be 8–10°C cooler than at the station below, and the weather can change surprisingly quickly.
One of the things our team loves most is that every journey feels different. Some days you’ll enjoy crystal-clear views across North Wales, while on others you’ll experience the mountain wrapped in cloud, creating an atmosphere that’s every bit as special.
What should I wear?
Our advice is simple: come prepared for all seasons – even in summer.

Even on a warm August afternoon, the summit can feel surprisingly chilly, particularly if there’s a breeze. Having an extra layer tucked into your bag means you can relax and enjoy your time at the top, whatever the weather decides to do.
Can trains still run if the weather changes?
Your safety is always our top priority.
Our experienced operations team closely monitors conditions on the mountain throughout the day. Most services run exactly as planned, but occasionally strong winds or other severe weather mean we need to adjust our operations.
While we know changes can be disappointing, every decision is made with the safety of our passengers and staff in mind.

What if it’s cloudy?
This is probably one of the questions we’re asked most often.
Of course, everyone hopes for those famous panoramic views from the summit. On a clear day, you may be able to see across Eryri, Anglesey, the Llŷn Peninsula and even as far as Ireland.
But here’s a little secret…
Some of our visitors tell us their favourite journeys have actually been on misty days.
Watching the clouds drift across the mountains, seeing the landscape appear and disappear through the mist, and experiencing the ever-changing moods of Snowdon can be just as memorable as a cloudless blue sky.
Summer is one of the best times to visit
July and August are among our busiest months, and it’s easy to see why.
Longer days, school holidays and (hopefully!) warmer weather make summer a wonderful time to experience Snowdon Mountain Railway.
If you’re planning a visit, we’d always recommend booking your tickets in advance. Popular departures can sell out, particularly during weekends and the school holidays.
Snowdon or Yr Wyddfa?
You’ll often see both names used, and they’re equally at home here.
Yr Wyddfa is the Welsh name for Wales’ highest mountain, while Snowdon remains the name many visitors search for when planning a trip.
Whichever name you know it by, it’s a truly remarkable place, and we’re privileged to help thousands of visitors experience it every year.
