Above the clouds
Autumn often brings the right conditions for one of Snowdon's most incredible natural spectacles: a cloud inversion. As mist and low cloud settle in the valleys below, the summit can emerge into bright sunshine, leaving the mountain surrounded by what looks like a sea of clouds.
If you're especially fortunate, you may even catch sight of the rare Brocken Spectre. When the sun sits low behind you, your shadow can appear projected onto the cloud below, surrounded by a rainbow-like halo. It's a remarkable optical phenomenon that has fascinated visitors to the mountains for centuries. While neither spectacle can ever be guaranteed, the settled weather patterns of early autumn can provide ideal conditions.
Signs of autumn
Autumn reveals a different side of Snowdon. Hillsides that were vibrant green through summer begin to glow with russet bracken and golden grasses, while the lower slopes become home to an array of colourful fungi thriving in the cool, damp conditions. As the sun sits lower in the sky, the changing light adds depth and drama to the mountain landscape, creating beautiful views throughout the journey.
