This September a Brienz Rothorn Railways steam locomotive currently operating in Switzerland will travel all the way to North Wales to be united with its sister locomotives at the Snowdon Mountain Railway in Llanberis.
Both the Brienz Rothorn and Snowdon coal-fired steam locomotives were made in the same factory in Winterhur, Switzerland. They both use the same type of rack and pinion system to travel uphill, a system invented by Dr. Roman Abt, a Swiss engineer, in the late nineteenth century. Next September will be the first and only time they will be back together again, working side by side 125 years later.
The Brienz Rothorn train will take passengers on short journey from Llanberis station. In addition to the journey, visitors will get a flavour for Switzerland and all things Swiss.
An exiting programme of activities have been planned, at weekends be greeted by our friends from the Gruyère region and sample some delicious Swiss Gruyère cheese.
