The Olympic Torch at the Summit of Snowdon

    31st May 2012

Sir Chris Bonnington lit the Olympic Flame on the summit of Snowdon on May 29th; the highest point to which the Olympic Flame will travel on its journey around the UK. The flame was carried by steam train on Snowdon Mountain Railway to the summit. Locomotive No 6, Padarn looked spectacular in full steam and seemed to be gleaming with pride as the torch started its 5 mile upward journey to 1085 meters above sea level. The station at Llanberis was thronged with well-wishers and local schoolchildren who gave the flame a tremendous send off. The media were out in full force and the train was accompanied for some of the way by the BBC helicopter. As the train pulled into the summit station hundreds of people, who had set off hours before to walk to the summit of Snowdon, were cheering and applauding the arrival of the flame and Sir Chris Bonnington. The atmosphere was like being at one big party and everyone involved had an amazing time sharing this once in a lifetime experience. Back to Recent News
