    Spacehoppers on Summit

    26th July 2011

With last weekend being race day, the summit experienced a totally different kind of event on the Sunday (17th July) prior to the Snowdon Race, when over two dozen spacehoppers descended on Hafod Eryri. The sponsored spacehop, which comprised of 29 people (and 2 dogs), began their day by journeying up the mountain on foot along the Llanberis path. Snowdon Mountain Railway carried the spacehoppers up on the early works train, ready and waiting to be inflated on arrival after a well deserved complimentary hot drink. The event was organised by Helen Warhurst to raise money for the Willow Foundation, a national charity which organises special days out for seriously ill 16 to 40 years old. The charity arranged a weekend in London to see the show ‘Wicked’ for Ruth Warhurst from Llandudno Junction, Helen’s sister, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Ruth passed away on April 21st this year, aged 31, after a 3-year battle with her illness. One of Ruth’s wishes was to do a sponsored spacehop in aid of the Willow Foundation. Helen and her dedicated group of spacehoppers managed to exceed their sponsorship target raising over £1,200. “We set off on the most unpromising day of the summer so far to climb Snowdon, arriving back tired and soaked, but elated to have reached the top of the mountain having raised so much money for the Willow Foundation in Ruth’s memory by doing the highest spacehop in the UK”.
