Snowdon Mountain Railway & Hafod Eryri closes for 2010

    31st October 2010

The last trains for 2010 ran on 31st october at Snowdon Mountain Railway. The railway is now closed to the general public until mid March 2011. We would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who visited us this year and helped to make this another great and exciting season. We now start on the massive winter works programme that is required to maintain this Victorian engineered, visitor attraction which is subject to some of the severest winter weather conditions in the UK, and which then runs relentlessly to full capacity throughout our busy summer months.SMR staff have now shut and de-commissioned Hafod Eryri at the summit of Snowdon for the winter . Work started immediately passenger trains had finished for the year (Sunday 31/10) and by Thursday 4th of November all systems had been mothballed and this iconic building could be safely left until spring 2011. It was just as well that SMR staff had achieved such a speedy operation as immediatelty following the shutdown the first snow of the winter descended on the mountain and made it impossible for trains and staff to get to the summit platforms. General manager Alan Kendall said " What a wonderful effort from our staff to complete this decommissioning operation in such a short time.If we hadn't finished before first snow , who knows what may have happened ! Even during the decommissioning our staff battled horrendous weather and all our staff involved are a credit to SMR " During the winter months there will be articles on the website to keep everyone informed about engineering work progression and our plans for next season and any forthcoming events for you to look forward to.
